Garage Door Services FAQ's

How does the garage door opener work?

The garage door opener works by activating the electric motor attached to the automatic door by a chain drive or belt drive. The electric motor is powered by a three-volt battery pack on the opener. The internal motor turns a sprocket, which operates the ascending and descending cables that make the door go up and down. A wall switch is often placed in an area near the garage door so that the door can be opened manually.

What are the common garage door problems?

Garage doors might have a lot of moving parts, but they really are quite simple. Most of the time, the issues you might be experiencing are related to a few common things that can be easily detected and corrected by a trained professional: bad rollers, bent tracks and broken springs.

What to do if my garage door won't open?

If your garage door won't open, there could be many reasons. If the door opens and then closes by itself, the safety sensor may be activated. This happens sometimes when animals such as squirrels press against the photocell sensor, so it's not a cause for alarm.

How long does garage last?

The average garage door lasts between 10 to 15 years, depending on the material and amount of maintenance done to it.

How do I know if my garage door springs are bad?

The garage door springs are made of torsion steel and are connected by a hook. After several years of use (10-15 years) the strength of the spring will weaken and have to be replaced. If you ever hear a "spring noise" when opening or closing your garage door this is a sign that you might need new springs soon.

Can garage doors be repaired?

Most overhead garage doors can be repaired by an experienced garage door repair specialist. Typically, a garage door involves the following parts – springs, track(s), bearings, cables, sensors, safety eyes and openers. Sometimes these parts are damaged or worn out due to improper installation, extreme weather conditions and misuse by owners.

Can garage door sensors go bad?

Yes, garage door sensors can go bad. In fact, this is usually due to their electrical connection being interrupted or broken. The sensors are meant to tell you if the door needs to be raised. The sensors function as a safety feature, preventing people or pets from getting under the door when it closes. Check your garage door manual or call a professional to help check these connections.
